  1. Nuclear warfare is a war involving the use of 
  2. nuclear weapons. Nuclear-weapons research 
  3. began in Britain 1940, but was transferred to 
  4. the USA after it entered World War II. The 
  5. research programme, known as the Manhattan 
  6. Project, was directed by J Robert 
  7. Oppenheimer. The worldwide total of nuclear 
  8. weapons in 1990 was about 50,000, and the 
  9. number of countries possessing nuclear 
  10. weapons stood officially at five-USA, USSR, 
  11. UK, France, and China-although some other 
  12. nations were thought either to have a usable 
  13. stockpile of these weapons (Israel) or the 
  14. ability to produce them quickly (Brazil, 
  15. India, Pakistan, and South Africa).
